Home Educated GCSE Art: The Start of the Journey!

In this series of posts, I tell the story of Kay* a home educated student who I tutored for the whole of their GCSE Art course. With each post, you'll see the development of Kay's work from the very beginning, right up to her A-grade completed projects.

Like many other art students, Kay started out with a blank, new sketchbook. So much potential, but also very daunting!

The GCSE art specification allows a lot of freedom in choosing a project, so it can be hard to know where to start when choosing subject matter for coursework. After some initial chats and brainstorming sessions, Kay and I decided on three projects that played to her strengths, in terms of themes that she found interesting, and art techniques she wanted to try.

Over the course of the two years, we would develop and tie these projects together, strategically incorporating technical workshops, museum visits, practical sketchbook work and book-based research.

Check out the next 'Home Educated GCSE Art' posts to see how these stages unfolded...
