Receiving Exam Results
The long summers of freedom are, for some, overshadowed by the wait for results. We’re taught from a young age that these grades are crucial to our future success. To some extent, that’s true. It’s wonderful to celebrate when students achieve the grades they were aiming for - a reflection of their effort and perseverance.
But sometimes, things don’t go according to plan. Disappointing grades can feel frustrating and demoralising, leaving students unsure about their future.

What To Do Next
The key to dealing with unexpected results is perspective. Ask yourself:
Do I have the grades I actually need to move forward on my chosen pathway?
✅ If yes, celebrate - you’ve achieved what you need.
😔 If no, focus on positive solutions, for example...
Will I have the chance to re-sit an exam?
✅ Many colleges allow resits alongside other courses, so this may still be an option.

Are there alternative pathways available?
✅ Apprenticeships, vocational routes, creative industries, and foundation courses often value more than exam scores.
🗨️ Contact your education provider of choice and discuss it with them. They should be happy to help!

Take a Minute
It’s also important to pause. Take a break, do something you enjoy, and give yourself time to reflect. Talk things over with family, friends, or trusted adults - teachers, carers, mentors. Remember, exams are just one step in a much longer journey.

Self-Worth and Soft Skills
Grades don’t define your value as a person. They are one measure of academic achievement, useful for applications and CVs. But what truly carries students forward are the so-called soft skills - which employers and universities consistently highlight as vital:
💪 Resilience – problem-solving and the ability to bounce back.
👥 Emotional intelligence – empathy, communication, teamwork.
🥷 Discipline – work ethic, organisation, and time management.
With these qualities, students can thrive in education, careers, and life - regardless of whether their results were exactly what they hoped for.

Take the Credit
Finally, exams are hard. The process is stressful and the pressure can be intense. Anyone who has gone through this deserves recognition.
So try saying it out loud: “Well done, me.”
Because in the bigger picture, results are a stepping stone - not the whole journey. What matters most is not the grade on the page, but how you use your strengths to build your future.
✨ To every student receiving exam results: you’ve already achieved more than you think.
